On the Beach’s social media jibe at Jet2 backfires

A social media post by On the Beach, which implies its prices are cheaper than Jet2holidays, has been widely ridiculed.

The post’s caption says: “When your mate tells you how much they paid for their holiday with Jet2,” above two stills from the first episode of BBC’s The Celebrity Traitors, which aired last week.

One picture shows contestant Alan Carr pulling a face while the other shows him being friendly with fellow contestant Paloma Faith. The two are good friends in real life, but Alan betrayed her in the first episode.

Members of the public have said they don’t agree with the message on the social media post, with one responding: “More like the face you pull when [you] realise you’ve booked with OTB, they’ve rang you for more money, won’t allow you to cancel and have no ABTA protection!”

Another said: “Jet2 every time. OTB is always way more expensive once luggage, seats and meals on flights are added,” while someone else posted: “On the Beach is probably the same price as Jet2… unless your [sic] travelling with no baggage and walking from airport to the hotel,” while another said On the Beach was cheaper ‘until you book it and they call you half an hour later to tell you it’s gone up’.

Another person posted to say On the Beach ‘showed their true colours during COVID’, when customers struggled to get their money back on cancelled holidays. The comment added: “They were ***** then and they still are. Jet2 & easyJet give far better prices and protection on package holidays.”

One poster advised On the Beach’s social media team: “It’s not too late to delete this,” while another said: “I’m a travel agent and most of the time smash your prices by using Jet2 so I wouldn’t get too cocky.”

Agents on the Travel Gossip Facebook group also criticised the social media post, with one claiming On the Beach – owner of the Classic Collection trade brand, which shut down last month – was ‘trying to emulate Ryanair or Aldi social media’ and advised the brand to: “Walk before you can run.”

Another said the post was a ‘bit too soon after what they did to Classic’.

Travel Gossip has invited Jet2 and On the Beach to comment.
