MSC forced to cancel cruise as ship detained due to ‘regulatory matter’

MSC Cruises has confirmed MSC Poesia passengers will be given a full refund after the ship was detained in Miami on Sunday (1 November).

The ship had been due to depart on an 11-night Southern and Western Caribbean sailing, but was held by the US Coast Guard for an examination.

US Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Captain Frank Florio said on Tuesday (3 November) that the Coast Guard had identified deficiencies with systems on board, and was addressing them with MSC, but could not comment on the specifics of the examination.

Passengers were told shortly after 10am on Tuesday (3 November) that the cruise had been cancelled, according to Cruise Hive.

An MSC Cruises statement said: “We have made the difficult decision to cancel the current sailing. We recognise how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to their holiday.

“Prior to departure, a regulatory matter arose that required resolution. Despite our efforts to address the matter, we were unable to resolve it in time for the sailing to proceed.

“Guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, and we are providing support to assist with their journey home.”
