More severe weather forecast across Thailand this week

Severe weather has been forecast across Thailand this week, with Bangkok and 61 provinces placed on alert, according to Thai newspaper, The Nation.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an advisory, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall across northern and southern parts of the country from 5 to 9 November.

The warning follows severe flooding in Bangkok at the end of September, and flooding in Phuket last month.

From Thursday to Saturday (5–7 November), northern Thailand is expected to experience thunderstorms, strong gusts, isolated hail and heavy downpours.

Rain is forecast to intensify in the south from Saturday to Monday (7–9 November). The 14 southern provinces are being warned of heavy rain, increasing the risk of flash flooding and landslides.

Rough seas are also expected in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, with waves exceeding two metres in areas affected by thunderstorms.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has placed Bangkok and 61 provinces on alert, with emergency personnel and disaster-response equipment on 24-hour standby.
