Curfews will be imposed across parts of France after weeks of unrest and rioting, the French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced.
He called on regional authorities to enforce ‘partial and localised curfews’ and said the Government would declare a state of emergency if needed, according to multiple reports.
The affected areas have not yet been announced, but they are expected to include cities and towns hit by rioting, such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Limoges and Lille.
The UK Foreign Office has not issued updated travel advice for France at the time of writing.
The curfews follow four weeks of protests, which began with students demonstrating over conditions in schools.
The movement has since grown into a broader protest over the cost of living, with around half a million people taking to the streets on Saturday (17 October), according to Le Monde.
The unrest has turned violent in places, with Lyon’s tourist office set alight and the spire of Limoges’s historic town hall collapsing in flames.
