Weather alerts issued across Spain as Storm Adam brings torrential rain

Weather warnings have been issued across eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands as Storm Adam brings heavy rain, causing flooding.

Spain’s state weather agency AEMET said the worst affected areas are Valencia on the mainland and the Balearic Islands, with orange alerts – the second highest level –  in place for the Region of Murcia and the Balearics.

The Valencian Meteorological Association, AVAMET, also reported a ‘historic rainfall episode’, with more than 700mm recorded, and severe flooding.

However, there are no flight disruptions at Valencia and Palma de Mallorca airports today (19 October), according to Flightradar24.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin said emergency army units have been dispatched from the mainland and are on standby in Mallorca with heavy pumping equipment and other specialised gear.

Palma City Council has responded by closing parks and council offices, and is advising against unnecessary travel. The Balearic Government has also closed schools across Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
