The south is defined by its calm waters and beaches, while the north is wild and volcanic
Drawing visitors in droves thanks to its year-round sunshine, Gran Canaria offers far more than endless beach days. Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll discover a vibrant island life shaped by dramatic landscapes, rich history, and unforgettable hidden gems.
A landscape shaped by time

In the centre of the island lie Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria, recognised by UNESCO as both a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site. The designation honours the region’s unique topography and extraordinary biodiversity.
Perched high in the mountains, marking almost the geographical centre of the island, Cruz de Tejeda is the perfect starting point for exploring the island’s dramatic interior. Surrounded by deep ravines and volcanic peaks, it offers sweeping views and easy access to scenic trails, traditional villages, and the rugged landscapes of the central highlands.
Natural rainbows on the Los Azulejos Route

Los Azulejos showcases some of the island’s most striking geological features. Here, jade-green rock faces blend with ochre and reddish tones exposed by centuries of erosion. These colourful formations were created by the explosive interaction of fire and water during the island’s volcanic birth.

Carved by erosion from ancient volcanic material, La Fortaleza forms a massive dome of reddish stone that dominates the surrounding landscape. The area surrounding La Fortaleza is dotted with caves that were once used by the island’s pre-Hispanic inhabitants, the ancient Canarii. These caves served as homes, storage spaces, and sacred places, offering shelter within the rock itself. Today, they remain silent witnesses to the island’s earliest communities and their deep connection with the land.
A different kind of nightlife
Gran Canaria’s nightlife isn’t limited to lively bars. The island is part of a select group of Starlight Destinations, recognised for its exceptionally clear night skies. Once the sun sets, step outside and look up — the dazzling blanket of stars is an experience in itself.
A bird’s eye perspective

One of the best ways to understand the island’s dramatic geography is from above. For sweeping views, head to Mirador del Balcón, also known as Mirador del Paso de Marinero. This clifftop viewpoint offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramas across one of Gran Canaria’s wildest stretches of coastline.
