A man who ran travel firms while banned as a company director and tried to illegally obtain an ATOL has been failed.
Darren Anderson, 43, of Gamston, Nottingham, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to four years in prison for fraud, theft and acting as the director of five companies while banned. At the hearing on 24 September, he was also disqualified as a company director for another 15 years.
Among those companies were travel companies Premium Getaways Ltd, and Zulu Travel Services Ltd, which had a registered address in Islington and was wound up in the public interest in June 2024 after it had failed to keep company accounts or pay bills for services.
Anderson was found to have attempted to gain an ATOL licence for Zulu Travel Services Ltd but his application never progressed after he failed to pay the fee.
Anderson also submitted false accounts for Zulu Travel Services Ltd to Companies House, recording the business as having net assets of £1.3 million and five employees.
In addition, he falsified Companies House records for The Holiday Travel Agent Ltd, which was listed with net assets of £255,000 and six employees on average.
Anderson’s string of offences across 2022 and 2023 caused losses of more than £200,000 to other businesses and individuals through unauthorised direct debit payments, unpaid invoices and rent arrears.
Investigators said he invented a network of fictitious employees and senior managers to make his companies appear larger and more credible and falsely claimed to be a doctor and a Lord.
A Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson said: “We welcome the sentence handed down following an investigation by the Insolvency Service into Zulu Travel Services.
“Holiday fraud remains a major concern, and this case demonstrates why it’s important that fraudulent companies are held to account and that consumers are equipped with the knowledge they need to protect themselves.
“Before booking, we strongly advise holidaymakers to check that their travel provider is an ATOL holder and that their holiday is ATOL protected. Consumers should receive an ATOL Certificate that confirms what’s covered.”
