Flights to Catania Airport in Sicily have been cancelled again today as the latest Mount Etna eruption causes a fifth day of disruption.
Flights into one of Italy’s busiest airports have been affected since Friday, when eruptions and volcanic ash first spewed from the volcano.
A statement on Catania Airport’s official Facebook page today confirmed that all arrivals remain suspended until 19:00.
Some departures are cancelled, but others are going ahead as planned.
Affected airlines include Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet and Lufthansa.
The Facebook post by Catania Airport reads: “Due to the erosive activity of Etna and considering the situation of the winds, the closure of sector C1 has been extended and the suspension of arrivals until 19:00 has been decided.
“Departs are allowed on runway 08. Passengers are asked to check the status of their flight with the airlines before going to the airport. Updates will follow in the next few hours.”
A Foreign Office update said: “Flights are currently affected by an ash cloud from Mount Etna. Check with your travel provider or Catania Airport before travelling.”
Sicily’s second major airport in Palermo appears to be unaffected.
