Wizz to shift capacity from loss-making Gatwick to Luton

Wizz Air is to move aircraft from London Gatwick to London Luton Airport, from where it will operate more low-cost flights.

The Hungarian-based airline’s Chief Executive József Váradi told The Telegraph that it wasn’t making money at Gatwick, where it has ‘an inferior set of slots’.

He said it will begin by moving one aircraft from Gatwick to Luton, where it is ‘more efficient financially’, with others set to follow.

“Circumstances change and you have to take action,” he said. “Whichever bases give you the most profitability, you should be biased toward them. That includes moving aircraft over from Gatwick to Luton.”

It comes after TUI confirmed it was moving its aircraft out of Luton to Gatwick next summer, and Jet2 announced its first series of flights from Gatwick, starting next summer.

Wizz has recently pulled out of an Abu Dhabi-based joint venture and closed its Vienna base.
