All visitors to Tanzania and Zanzibar must now have mandatory travel insurance for the duration of their stay before entering the country.
The new requirement came into force on 1 October, with tourists aged 18 and over required to pay $44 (£33) for cover.
Children aged three to 17 will pay $22 (£17), while discounted rates are available for families and groups, including a 10% discount on large group policies.
Travellers can buy the policy online or at ports of entry on arrival.
The Foreign Office (FCDO) advised: “You only need to buy insurance for your first port of entry, either mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar. You may be refused entry if you do not have the required insurance.”
Visitors arriving in mainland Tanzania must purchase insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) for their stay, up to a maximum of 92 days. Other travel insurance policies are not accepted for the entry requirement.
The same applies to arrivals in Zanzibar, where policies are issued by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Travellers visiting both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar do not need to buy two policies, the NIC confirmed.
The insurance covers emergencies, such as medical evacuations and repatriation.
