Netflix is set to release a new documentary on the Costa Concordia disaster, revisiting one of the cruise industry’s most high-profile disasters.
‘Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea’ will debut on 10 July, featuring survivor accounts and previously unseen footage from the tragedy.
The luxury cruise ship operated by Costa Cruises, which is owned by Carnival Corporation, was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it deviated from its planned route to perform a sail-by salute.
During the unscheduled manoeuvre, it struck a reef off Italy’s Giglio Island on 13 January 2012.
The film retraces the events that led to a 53-metre gash being torn in the ship’s hull, causing it to capsize and tragically resulting in 32 fatalities, including five crew members.
According to Netflix, the documentary offers an immersive account of the collision, evacuation and aftermath, combining archive footage with first-hand testimony from those on board.
Despite a six-hour rescue effort, the incident remains the deadliest cruise ship disaster in modern history and is still widely remembered across the industry.
Mundy Cruising Managing Director Edwina Lonsdale said: “Many of us still vividly remember this disaster 14 years ago and our hearts continue to go out to all those involved: it was a heartbreaking and tragic episode.
“Carnival Corporation reacted speedily, and the cruise industry continues to work collaboratively to boost its already extremely strong safety records. These statistics are widely available in the public domain.”
