Delve into Alonissos with Sunvil

In partnership with the Greece National Tourism Organisation

Sunvil creates itineraries that give its customers the chance to explore Greece’s hidden destinations, staying in locally-owned accommodations within small resorts.

The company’s goal is to immerse guests in the heart of each town or village, offering them a genuine feel for the area and the chance to hear stories from local residents.

In Alonissos, the second in our series spotlighting lesser-known destinations, you will find a lush, green island which will appeal to nature lovers, walkers and divers.

Located in the northern Sporades archipelago, the island is about 20 kilometres long by 4km wide. Ferries and catamarans leave regularly from the main port of Patitiri for Skopelos, which is 20 minutes away, and for Skiathos, another hour further to the west, making it an ideal twin-centre holiday.

In the north of the island is the fishing harbour of Votsi. It has a traditional, laid-back village feel with a few small shops and good tavernas. A walk over the headland to Patitiri leads to Rossoum beach, which also has its own tavernas.

Old Alonissos, perched above Patitiri, offers stunning views and a charming, restored village feel that is popular with artists. Reachable by bus (June–September), taxi (7–8 minutes), or a 35–45-minute walk along a goat track, it’s especially atmospheric in the evenings, making it a great for dinner.

Off Alonissos’ coast you’ll find the National Marine Park, home to the endangered monk seal. There is also a wreck dive site, so it’s great for travellers looking to discover the underwater world.

Its relaxed, undiscovered nature makes it an island Sunvil clients return to year-on-year.

Sunvil has a variety of accommodation options on the island.

Mega Nero Cottages are a pair of detached self-catering cottages that are set in a peaceful spot above Votsi. With views across the bay and nearby islets, both cottages are nearly identical, featuring a spacious air-conditioned living room with a full-size sofabed, a well-equipped kitchen, a double bedroom opening onto a sea-facing patio with sunbeds, and a modern bathroom with shower.  The Upper Cottage has its own private pool, set to the rear with good privacy and shaded by olive trees.

Lithea Villas and Studios are located in the bay of Agios Petros, 8km from Patitiri on Alonissos. Surrounded by olive, fruit, pine, and cypress trees, it’s perfect for nature lovers seeking peace and scenic walks away from the bustle. Set on a private estate with sea views, the complex includes traditional stone-built villas on the hillside and studios at sea level near the beach. All accommodations are spacious, self-catering, and fully equipped with modern comforts.

The Atrium Hotel is set among pine trees near Patitiri, and offers sea views and modern comfort in 29 air-conditioned rooms, all with balconies. Facilities include a pool, bar, and WiFi. It’s a 15-minute downhill walk to the harbour or Rossoum beach. Note: the return walk is uphill and may require car hire or taxis for those with mobility issues.  Guests will stay on a bed and breakfast basis.

Tips from the locals…

Sunvil local representative Julia Browne said: “Visitors to the island who enjoy walking must try one of the hiking trails. They are really well maintained and the only way to see much of the island is on foot.”

Sunvil Overseas Manager Claire Kalatzis said: “Be sure to take a a boat excursion to the uninhabited islands of the Marine Park, and the Underwater Museum is amazing, where divers can see the shipwrecks.”
