Two travel agency branches in Glasgow have temporarily closed following a huge fire that broke out next to Glasgow Central railway station at the weekend.
Hays Travel and Barrhead Travel have shut their Gordon Street stores until further notice following the blaze, which started late Sunday afternoon at a vape shop on Union Street and spread through a neighbouring Victorian building. The building partially collapsed several hours later.
All train services at Glasgow Central, which is Scotland’s busiest station, have been cancelled and ScotRail said disruption is expected to last for several days.
Barrhead Travel President Jacqueline Dobson said: “We are deeply saddened by the impact the fire has had on the many local business owners affected and our thoughts are with everyone in the local community during this difficult time.
“Our colleagues in the Gordon Street store were fortunately not impacted on Sunday, as the station evacuation took place later in the evening. Both yesterday and today, the store has remained closed, with our team members either working from home or supporting operations from alternative locations.
“At this stage, we do not yet have a confirmed timeframe for when the Gordon Street store will reopen. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will share further updates as soon as more information becomes available. The safety and wellbeing of our staff is our top priority.”
Posting on Facebook yesterday (Monday 9 March), Hays Travel Glasgow said: “Due to the recent fire at Glasgow Central, the shop will be closed until further notice. We will keep all our customers updated when the shop can reopen via Facebook, and we appreciate everyone understanding at this time.
“You can still visit some of the team for general enquiries, booking holidays, collection of tickets, you will find us at Hays Travel Rutherglen – 224 Main St, Glasgow G73 2HP. You can still contact us on 0141 319 4933.”
