Iberostar’s Selection Es Trenc hotel in Mallorca has created a cocktail as a tribute to Designer Travel agent Angela Mayall, who died a year ago after a short battle with cancer.
One of Angela’s colleagues, Lucia Campanella, was visiting the newly-opened property with her husband Steve when she came up with the idea and suggested it to the hotel team.
“The hotel had a welcome cocktail and while I was sipping it by the pool I thought it would be lovely if they could make one in Ang’s honour because she liked a cocktail, Cosmo was her favourite,” said Lucia.
“I asked at reception, they advised me to email guest relations and they agreed! Together with the bar staff we created the Angela M Cocktail. It took three attempts, but I think it’s delicious.”
The gin-based cocktail, which includes pink hibiscus salt from the local Salinas (salt flats), mango syrup, tonic water and grapefruit, will be available for guests to order at the bar. Staff have also created a plaque to present to guests to ‘introduce’ Angela and invited them to ‘raise a glass’ to her.
Angela’s best friend, Designer Travel owner Amanda Matthews, tasted the Angela M Cocktail on a trip to the Selection Es Trenc hotel this week. “It’s delicious – very strong, but delicious. Lucia got the flavours just right,” she said.
“Ang would have absolutely loved it. She was so full of life, she would have been delighted to know the hotel had created this for her.”
The cocktail is just one of the tributes to Ang, who had been with Designer Travel for 16 years and was its top seller. Last Christmas, its 177 homeworkers, support staff and a few of Ang’s top customers were given stuffed toy turtles – Ang’s favourite creature – to take around the world with them. So far, they’ve been photographed in places as far away at New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the Maldives and even a Vegas casino, with the images sent to her husband, daugher, and mum and dad.
“We’ve also planted a tree in her memory, put a water cooler in a school in India and donated a laptop to a school in Africa in her name,” said Amanada. “We’ve been coming up with lots of ways of remembering her as it comes up to her anniversary, and I want to thank Iberostar and the team for this lovely tribute.”
