Hospitality workers in the Balearics threaten summer strike

Hospitality workers in the Balearics are threatening to walk out for six days in July, potentially disrupting hotel and restaurant services at the start of the summer holiday season.

The Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) in Spain has called on its 180,000 hospitality worker members to take action after it walked away from negotiations earlier this week.

Strike action is set to begin on 10 July, with further walkouts planned for 18, 19, 25, 26 and 31 July, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reports.

The union members work in restaurants, bars and hotels and include front-of-house staff such as bartenders, as well as kitchen staff and housekeepers.

The union walked out of a meeting about pay and working conditions on Monday 23 June, calling an offer of an 11% pay increase insufficient.

UGT Union General Secretary of the Federation of Services, Mobility and Consumption José García Relucio said: “We will not accept a single step backwards in acquired rights. We have come here to negotiate to improve the conditions of hospitality workers, not to make them worse.”

Other points of contention include sick pay and reducing the working week to 35 hours, with employers reportedly rejecting the latter proposal.

Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca president Javier Vich described the call for strike action as a ‘failure’ of the negotiating parties.

Earlier this year, the UK Foreign Office issued a warning to holidaymakers after hotel workers in Tenerife went on strike,

Travel Gossip has approached the UGT Union for comment.
