Foreign Office warns of strikes and demonstrations in Italy

The Foreign Office (FCDO) has warned UK travellers heading to Italy to expect possible disruption from strikes and demonstrations.

The warning, which also covers Vatican City, says a national strike is planned from 9pm on Thursday (29 October) until 9pm on Friday (30 October).

The Grassroots Trade Union (USB) has called a general strike on Friday across public and private sectors, with demonstrations expected in more than 50 cities, including Rome, Milan and Naples.

The FCDO has also warned of possible further demonstrations in major cities following unrest earlier this month across northern Italy.

It said demonstrations had led to violent riots and looting, with an increased police and military presence in Milan.

The FCDO said: “Recent demonstrations across northern Italian cities have led to violent riots and looting. There is an increased presence of police and military personnel in Milan. Further demonstrations may take place in major cities.

“A national strike is planned from 9pm on 29 October to 9pm on 30 October. The strike may disrupt rail and air travel, taxis, highways, local public transportation, schools, and government offices. Check with your travel provider for the latest information.”

A planned public transport strike has been cancelled following an order from Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Train operators Trenord and Trenitalia have said services will run as normal, while public transport operators across the country have also guaranteed services. Some disruption may still occur due to staff participating in demonstrations.

A statement on Trenord’s website said: “The nationwide strike called by the USB trade union from 9:00 PM on October 29 to 8:59 PM on October 30, 2026, has been postponed to a later date for rail transport following an injunction issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

“In light of this injunction, trains will operate according to the official timetable.”

Travellers are advised to check with their transport providers for the latest updates before setting off.
