Rail and airport strikes to disrupt Spain and Italy travel this week

Rail strikes in Spain and Italy, alongside airport ground-handling strikes in Pisa and Florence, are set to disrupt travel later this week.

In Italy, a 24-hour national general strike is expected to affect trains and flights.

Railway staff are due to walk out from 21:00 on Thursday until 20:59 on Friday, affecting Trenitalia and other train operators.

Ground-handling staff at Pisa Galileo Galilei and Florence Peretola airports are due to strike for 24 hours on Friday, potentially disrupting check-in, boarding and baggage handling, as well as causing flight delays and cancellations.

Flights are expected to be protected during Italy’s ‘guaranteed operating periods’ of 07:00 to 10:00 and 18:00 to 21:00. Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC is expected to publish a list of guaranteed flights ahead of the stoppage.

In Spain, train drivers’ union SEMAF is calling on Renfe staff to strike for 24 hours on Thursday, from 00:01 to 23:59, in an ongoing dispute over rail safety standards. Cancellations and delays are expected across Renfe’s network.

Spanish drivers working for SNCF’s Ouigo services are also due to strike on Friday (30 October) over working conditions. Further one-day strikes are planned for 2, 6 and 9 November, and 4 and 8 December.
