Low-cost carrier has confirmed its flights between Liverpool and Reykjavik are due to end in November 2025 as part of a refocusing of the business.
The winter-only Liverpool-Reykjavik service, introduced in 2022, will resume on 3 October but seats are only available to book until 29 November.
A UK-based spokesperson for PLAY said: “Currently, PLAY’s Liverpool route is due to cease in November.”
The airline is also planning to axe all flights to the US in October if a proposed shareholder takeover is successful. Currently, it flies from Reykjavik to Baltimore/Washington, Boston and New York.
The takeover group, led by CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson and Vice Chairman of the Board Elías Skúli Skúlason, intends to fly to fewer Northern European cities following the takeover and concentrate instead on flying from Iceland to ‘sunnier destinations’.
It has not confirmed if it will drop its route between London and Reykjavik, but there are currently no seats on sale after 1 November.
Following the takeover, four of PLAY’s aircraft will continue to operate to and from Iceland under a Maltese Air Operator Certificate and the airline’s Icelandic AOC will be returned.
The remaining six aircraft will be wet-leased, with crew, to other airlines.
“This is primarily a plan for practical changes to the operations of the Icelandic airline PLAY,” said Einar. “We’re focusing on the profitable aspects of the business—sun destination flights—and discontinuing those that have not yielded results.
“We look forward to continuing to foster competition in the aviation market with our red aircraft and Icelandic crews. Our main goal remains to offer Icelanders affordable flights to the sun.”
The takeover has not been finalised and must go through an approval process, said the spokesperson.
