The Great Outdoors
Pristine wilderness, awe-inspiring wonders and unforgettable experiences
With over half a million lakes and rivers, thousands of kilometres of coastline,105 provincial and 7 national parks, Ontario is famous for its vast, unspoiled wilderness and nature is always nearby for recreation and relaxation.
Located under 2 hours from Toronto are the world-famous Niagara Falls and picturesque Niagara Region. Thrilling attractions allow you to take in her thundering power by land, water and air – visitors can travel right to the edge of the crashing waters on a boat tour, experience the spectacle on an outdoor observation deck behind the Falls, take in the vistas from above in a helicopter or an exhilarating zipline ride.
The region is also filled with lush parks, bountiful orchards and vineyards, and charming towns and villages. Just 30 minutes down the scenic Niagara Parkway is Niagara-on-the-Lake, a historic town packed with shops, galleries and inns.
In Algonquin Provincial Park, visitors can try and spot one of Canada’s most recognisable creatures, the elusive Algonquin Moose, while taking part in adventure sports such as white water rafting.
Sandbanks Provincial Park on Lake Ontario is one of the best sandy beaches in the province and has the largest bay mouth barrier dune formation in the world. Take a walking trail to explore the park’s dune and wetland habitats.
Experience Ontario’s great outdoors by canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding – with waterways catering to all abilities – and by hiking, ziplining and treetop trekking. Fishing and golf are also on offer, including ice fishing when the lakes freeze over. The region’s golf courses provide breathtaking views, such as the pine forests and sculptured granite in the Muskoka area that makes for a beautiful backdrop for the golf courses on Lake Simcoe.
Discover beautiful lake beaches, such as Sauble Beach and Wasaga Beach, hire a motorhome and visit the Great Lakes, or traverse the scenic trails of Killarney Provincial Park, where it is possible to hike to Silver Peak, the park’s highest point. Elsewhere, Bruce Trail is Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath at 550 miles long from Niagara to Tobermory.
