Wizz Air’s ‘green travel’ advert found to be misleading

Wizz Air has been reprimanded for running an advert that claimed it is one of the greenest airlines.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) asked Wizz to provide more information over a Google ad that was seen on 9 June 2024, which stated: “Fly Wizz Air – one of the greenest choices in air travel.”

Wizz Air responded by saying it had invested billions of euros into decarbonisation, operated the youngest and most carbon-efficient fleet in Europe and had the lowest carbon emissions per passenger, at 52 g carbon dioxide per revenue passenger kilometres (CO2/RPK), and was actively renewing its fleet.

It added it had invested in research and development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and aimed to reach 10% SAF usage by 2030. It also had a dedicated environment, social and governance strategy (ESG) Officer, who was a member of the senior leadership team.

But the ASA said the advert was misleading and told Wizz Air to ensure future adverts provided sufficient information so customers could verify comparisons with identifiable competitors, or signposted consumers to such information.

The ASA ruling said: “The ad must not appear again in the form investigated.”
