Dozens of organisations are planning a mass demonstration in the Mallorca capital on Sunday, threatening to cause gridlock in the city.
The planned protest is the latest in a series of protests against over-tourism in the Balearic Islands.
A previous demonstration brought 15,000 people onto the city’s streets. At the end of the march, around 100 protestors surrounded tourists at a restaurant in the city centre, before being dispersed by police, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
Sunday’s demonstration has been timed ahead of a 12 August total solar eclipse, which is expected to swell the island’s tourist numbers by several thousand.
“We can’t cope with more tourists,” a spokesperson for the protest groups David Comas said when the march was first announced in June, as reported by Majorca Daily Bulletin.
Meanwhile, workers at Palma Airport are planning a series of strikes, starting on Tuesday 28 July.
Employees of Swissport will walk out from 7am-12pm and from 7pm until 10pm on Monday, and on August 1, 4 and 8 in a dispute over pay and working conditions.
