The city of Venice has reinstated its entrance fee for day-trippers for the second year running.
Venice introduced its trial day-tripper tax for 29 days in 2024, with visitors having to pay the fee on weekends and holidays between 25 April and mid-July.
This year, the fee will apply on 54 dates between 18 April and 27 July. The reinstated tax will be in place over the Easter weekend, running from 18 April to 4 May.
After that, only day-trippers who visit Venice on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between May 4 and the end of July will have to pay the charge.
For organised holidaymakers, the entrance fee will remain at €5 (4.30). However, the cost will double to €10 (£8.60) for visitors who purchase their entrance tickets within three days of arrival.
The new pricing structure has been put in place in an attempt to dissuade last-minute day-trippers.
Once visitors have paid for their fee, they will receive a QR code, which they will need to show to stewards at key entrance points in the city, such as Venezia Santa Lucia train station.
Overnight visitors will be exempt, but already have to pay a separate tourist tax that has been in place for several years. Tourists coming from the surrounding Veneto region and children under 14 are also exempt.
Last year, the fee raised more than €2.4 million for the city and has been introduced again to help manage overtourism.
