One of the biggest aircraft carriers in the world is arriving in Palma on the island of Mallorca today.
The USS Gerald R Ford, the flagship of the US navy, is carrying 4,500 personnel and will be accompanied by several ships in the combat fleet.
It will remain in Mallorca for eight days, coinciding with the ABTA Convention being held in the resort of Calvia in the south-west of the island from Tuesday to Thursday next week, with delegates starting to arrive on Sunday 5 October.
According to local news reports, a fleet of 30 or more coaches will be ferrying marines from the Gerald R Ford on various excursions around the island, including to the popular resort of Magaluf, which is in Calvia. Food trucks will be in the port of Palma too, say reports.
The aircraft carrier is stopping in Mallorca after returning to the Mediterranean following a NATO training exercise in the North Sea.
Up to 400 ABTA delegates will be attending the Travel Convention from 6 to 8 October, staying at the Meliá Calvià Beach and Meliá South Beach hotels. Tickets are still available.
