The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) says it is ready to support any British nationals who may be affected by the New Year’s Eve bar fire in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana.
It’s reported at least 40 people were killed in the fire, which broke out at around 1.30am local time in Le Constellation bar. Up to 100 are seriously injured.
The nationalities of the victims have not yet been released and local officials say the identification process could take days or weeks. However, it has been confirmed that several French and Italian citizens are among the missing.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: “Our thoughts are with all those injured and killed in the terrible tragedy in Crans-Montana, and we pay tribute to the Swiss emergency services who are leading the response.
“We will continue to monitor the situation, and our consular staff stand ready to support any British nationals who may be affected.”
The FCDO updated its advice for Switzerland, sharing details of a helpline.
The update says: “Following the fire in Crans Montana on 1 January, the Swiss authorities have opened a dedicated phone number for Swiss and foreign nationals affected by this incident.
“Swiss authorities recommend that people seek to contact loved ones on all available channels (email, social media, phone) before attempting to call. You can call +41 848 112 117. You may be asked for proof of kinship if you ask for information about your close family.”
Switzerland Tourism CEO Martin Nydegger shared a post on LinkedIn that said: “The Swiss tourism industry extends its deepest sympathy to the people of Crans-Montana following the devastating fire at the turn of the year. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the community that is standing together during this difficult time.”
