TUI issued an alert to its customers in Rhodes after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck between the Greek island and Marmaris in Turkey in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 3 June).
The tour operator told British holidaymakers in Rhodes to ‘remain calm and follow any safety instructions provided by your accommodation or local officials.’
“Should any specific action be required on your part, rest assured that we will contact you directly with further guidance. Your safety and well-being are our top priority,” the alert added.
The quake struck around 23km north of Rhodes and had a depth of 68km, with its tremors reportedly felt across southern Greece, western Turkey, and coastal areas of the Aegean Sea.
At present, there have been no reports of injuries in Rhodes.
The Greek National Tourism Organisation told Travel Gossip: “No injuries have been reported from last night’s earthquake in the waters between Turkey and Greece.”
Meanwhile, in Turkey, at least 69 people have been reported injured after attempting to jump from heights due to panic caused by the tremors. A 14-year-old girl has died in the town of Fethiye, Turkey, after suffering from a panic attack following the earthquake.
EasyJet holidays said there had been ‘minimal’ impact to its customers and holidays are continuing as planned.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office have yet to issue any warnings for Brits travelling to Rhodes or Turkey.
