TUI has confirmed that the Italian shipyard Fincantieri has found slots to build two new Marella ships, with the first due to be delivered in 2031.
The second is expected to follow in 2033.
The order for the two new ships, each of which will carry 3,200 passengers, will top €2 billion, said TUI.
The re-fleeting is subject to the conclusion of binding shipbuilding contracts, the availability of financing and other customary terms and conditions, it added.
The re-fleeting may take place within the current Marella ownership structure, but TUI is also exploring partnership options.
“The UK cruise market, in which Marella holds a leading position, continues to prove an attractive investment proposition and is expected to grow by 9% per annum until 2030,” said TUI in a statement.
“The project is anticipated to enhance Marella’s competitive position in the UK market ensuring a long-term cruise product proposition.”
Each ship is expected to earn €130m to €150m a year, with a return on invested capital of 11% to 12%.
