Jamaican Government launches hurricane disaster relief fund

The Jamaican Government has launched a fundraiser to help rebuild the island after last week’s hurricane.

The Hurricane Melissa relief fund said: “Thousands of people have been affected, with families displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered. Now begins the hard road to recovery. Together, let’s stand ready to help families rebuild their homes, restore their lives, and bring hope back to our nation.”

Visit Jamaica Director of Tourism Donovan White urged people to donate, saying: “Recovery will take every helping hand. Together, let us stand ready to protect and help families recover, rebuild homes and restore livelihoods.”

Other travel organisations have set up their own funds, including the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s appeal and Sandals, which is raising money through its Sandals Foundation.

TUI Group’s charity the TUI Care Foundation has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to support people in Jamaica affected by Hurricane Melissa.

The foundation said it will match every donation made by the public, meaning total funds donated will be doubled.

It said 100% of donations will go directly to recovery efforts.

Launching the appeal, TUI Care Foundation said: “The hurricane has caused widespread devastation, destroying homes, schools and infrastructure, and leaving thousands without access to essential services.

“Entire coastal areas and rural communities have been cut off by flooding and landslides, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The situation continues to evolve by the hour, and urgent support is needed.

“In response, the TUI Care Foundation is mobilising its Emergency Relief Fund to provide both immediate and long-term recovery aid.”
