Travellers face disruption and flight cancellations tomorrow (28 November), when a 24-hour nationwide general strike takes place in Italy.
The strike, called by the USB and CUB trade unions in protest about the Italian Government’s budget bill, will affect long-distance trains, local transport, ferries, airports and other transport links, according to local media.
Flight crews, baggage handlers and airport ground staff are taking part in the strikes and there are warnings of cancellations and flight delays at Italian airports.
Passengers have been advised to check their flight status with their travel company before going to the airport.
ITA Airways said it has cancelled 26 domestic flights, 23 of which were scheduled on Friday.
However, the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC has said flights in Italy are guaranteed from 7am-10am and 6pm-7pm local time. It has published a list of guaranteed flights on its website.
Rail workers will strike from 9pm on Thursday 27 November for 24 hours. Some essential regional services will run in the morning and evening of 28 November.
Fiumicino Airport in Rome is warning rail connections may be delayed or cancelled. Buses and subways in the city, operated by ATAC, will also be affected by Friday’s strike, however some services will run in the morning and the evening.
Public transport operated by ATM in Milan will run as normal on Friday, although staff will walkout for four hours on Sunday 30 November.
