Travellers to Italy warned of disruption today as workers stage 24-hour strike

A 24-hour national general strike in Italy has led to the cancellation of some flights, trains and bus services.

The strike started at 9pm last night and will continue till 9pm today.

Italy’s flag carrier ITA Airways has cancelled 34 domestic and international flights, including some services between London, Rome and Milan.

Train services in Rome, Milan and in other cities across Italy have also been disrupted with both long-distance, intercity and regional trains affected.

National train company Trenitalia has guaranteed to maintain essential services during strike days, but only from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 9pm.

Today’s strike also affects bus, subway and tram services, with staff walkout times varying from city to city. Travel is most likely to be disrupted outside commuter times, when operators are not obliged to maintain a minimum level of service.

In a message to customers on its website, Jet2 said: “We have been made aware that there is National Italian Strike action taking place in Italy on 20th June 2025.

“These strikes will potentially have an impact on all public transport across Italy.

“Our dedicated operations teams are working hard behind the scenes to ensure we have the latest information for you. Please check back here for regular updates.

“Should any flight disruption occur, our teams will be in contact with you and updates will be given through our crew on-board.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Workers unions in Italy are asking for money to be diverted from the military to health, education, transport and safety in the workplace.
