Air and international rail passengers are facing a fifth day of disruptions as airports, airlines and train operators continue to battle severe wintry weather.
Amsterdam remains one of the worst hit airports in northern Europe, warning that only ‘limited’ air traffic is possible from Schiphol. Cancellations so far today include an easyJet flight to Edinburgh and a British Airways flight to London, with many more UK flights suffering hours-long delays.
Dutch carrier KLM has again been forced to cancel scores of flights. In a statement, the airline said: “Severe winter weather, including snow and strong winds, is currently disrupting flights at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. We understand this is stressful, and we are doing everything possible to help you reach your destination.
“If you are travelling to, from, or via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, your flight may be delayed or cancelled.
“Due to limited capacity across airlines, crew scheduling adjustments, and operational constraints caused by the weather, rebooking is taking longer than usual. Please be assured that our teams are working around the clock to get you to your destination as soon as possible.”
Schiphol said: “Our snow crews are working around the clock to keep the runways clear, and aircraft are being carefully de-iced to ensure everyone can travel safely.
“However, the wintry conditions are expected to cause disruptions to the flight schedule in the coming days.”
Rail services in the Amsterdam area continue to be disrupted, and no trains will be running to or from Schiphol until at least 2pm today.
Eurostar’s services between London St Pancras and Amsterdam are also affected. One of this morning’s trains was cancelled, while a second stopped at Brussels. Trains scheduled for later today are due to operate.
Operations at some UK regional airports were also disrupted yesterday due to snow and ice. Both Liverpool and Aberdeen airports temporarily suspended services to clear their runways.
The Met Office is warning of severe wintry conditions across most of the country at least until Thursday.
