Three British nationals among those killed in Lisbon funicular crash

Three British nationals are among the 16 people who died after Lisbon’s famous Gloria Funicular derailed and crashed, Portuguese police have revealed.

Lisbon Civil Protection Agency Head Margarida Castro Martins said all the people who died were adults.

Five people from Portugal, two Koreans, two Canadians, one German, one Ukrainian and one American are also thought to be among the dead.

More than 20 other people were also injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, although Portuguese newspaper Observador said a cable came loose, causing the vehicle to lose control and collide with a nearby building.

The Gloria Funicular is one of Lisbon’s most popular tourist attractions.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said it was in touch with local authorities and stood by ‘to provide consular assistance if there are any affected British nationals’.
