Thailand returns to normal following earthquake; death toll rises in Myanmar

Tourism officials in Thailand insist the country is back to normal following last Friday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt across Thailand, including in the capital, Bangkok, where airports were evacuated and transport services briefly suspended. One building under construction collapsed.

However, services returned to normal on Saturday, less than 24 hours later, according to Director of Tourism Authority Thailand Ms Worapa Angkhisirisap.

Tourist attractions, shopping centres and businesses have all resumed operations, with festivals and events, such as Songkran (Thai New Year), set to continue as planned.

Transport services, including cross-country rail services have also returned to normal, and all airports in Bangkok are operational.

The latest travel advice from the Foreign Office reads: “There has been a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, with strong tremors reported across Thailand and some damage reported to buildings in Bangkok.

“There may be after-shocks. If you’re in the area or planning to travel there, follow the advice of the local authorities or your tour operator and monitor local media.”

The earthquake struck central Myanmar, near Mandalay, at a depth of about seven miles. Reports indicate that thousands of people have been killed in the country, with thousands more missing. The death toll is expected to rise in the coming days.

Homes, business and schools have been destroyed, with roads blocked and communication systems are down in parts of the country.

Despite halting trips to Myanmar in 2020, Intrepid Travel has launched an emergency appeal through its not-for-profit the Intrepid Foundation to raise funds for medical support and aid for those impacted.

General Manager of the Intrepid Foundation Biheng Zhang said: “The impact of the earthquake in Myanmar is severe. After years of ongoing civil war in the region, this earthquake proves devastating for the people and communities who were already facing a humanitarian crisis.

“Although Intrepid does not currently run trips in Myanmar, the country continues to hold a special place in our heart. I appeal to the global travelling community – who may have been to Myanmar in the past or who have simply visited the region.

“Your support at these times can bring critical aid to the thousands of families at a time they need it the most.”
