Thailand’s new government is planning to introduce a 300-baht entry fee for foreign tourists arriving by air, according to local reports.
The proposal for the entry fee will be tabled at the first Cabinet meeting of the new government, said news publication Nation Thailand.
The charge, which is around £6, will not apply to those entering Thailand via its land borders with neighbouring countries or by sea.
Thailand had been considering a reduced, 150-baht fee to enter by land or by sea, but Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed to National Thailand that these plans had been put on hold to avoid impacting commuters and short-stay visitors.
Meanwhile, Venice will reimpose its controversial entry fee for day trippers on 3 April.
The fee, first introduced for entry during peak travel dates in 2024, costs €5 if booked in advance, rising to €10 closer to the day of entry.
This year, the fee will be imposed on a total of 60 days between April and July, compared to 54 days last year. It only applies to day trippers as overnight visitors pay a separate levy.
