Passengers flying in and out of Italy are being advised to check with their airline because of strikes taking place today.
Air traffic control staff employed by national operator ENAV at Rome, Cagliari and Naples airports, and ground staff at several airlines have walked out in an eight-hour national strike, which is taking place between 10am and 6pm local time today.
In addition, easyJet pilots and crew based in Italy are striking for eight hours, while security staff at Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, and ground staff at Palermo airport are striking from midday until 4pm. Ground staff at Milan Malpensa and Cagliari airports are due to walk out from 1pm to 5pm, which could impact check-in, boarding and baggage handling services.
EasyJet has pre-emptively cancelled some flights, including return services between Gatwick and Milan Malpensa and Gatwick and Naples later today, although earlier flights have gone ahead.
National carrier ITA Airways said it has cancelled around 38% of its flights for today.
Typically Holidays Managing Director Daniele Broccoli told Travel Gossip he scrambled to rebook a client when their KLM flight this morning was cancelled on Sunday afternoon.
The Italian civil aviation authority ENAC said flight schedules between 7am-10am and 6pm-9pm today are guaranteed to operate.
But it told passengers due to fly between the guaranteed flight times to check with their airline.
