Spain’s Ministry of Transport is warning that up to two million passengers could be hit by an indefinite strike at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, which started on Tuesday (4 August).
Almost 1,200 staff employed by the ground handling agent Groundforce are involved in the industrial action.
Media reports say that at least 20 flights were cancelled on Tuesday morning due to the walkout.
The Spanish Government has established minimum service levels to ensure essential operations during the strike, which it says could affect 11.600 flights this summer.
It is guaranteeing that 58% of flights to and from international destinations, or to and from other Spanish cities more than five hours away by public transport will go ahead.
It is also guaranteeing that 80% of flights to and from the Balearics and the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Meilla will continue during August.
And 35% of flights to and from other Spanish cities less than five hours away by public transport will still go ahead.
Groundforce provides check-in, boarding and baggage handling for a number of airlines at El Prat, including Air Europa, Lufthansa, Air France and KLM.
However, Travel Gossip understands that flights to and from the UK on British Airways and easyJet are handled by another company, Menzies Aviation; Iberia and Vueling are handled by South Europe Ground Services; and Ryanair is handled by Aviapartner.
