The nationwide state of emergency in Trinidad and Tobago has been extended for three months.
It was initially declared on 30 December 2024 following a weekend of violence which took the islands’ murder total to 623 last year.
The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice to say: “On January 13, 2025, the Trinidad and Tobago authorities extended the nationwide state of emergency for a further three months. No curfew has been imposed and there are no restrictions on public gatherings or marches.”
It added that, during the state of emergency, security forces do not need a warrant to search people and property or to arrest and detain people.
The advice continues: “Expect heightened police and military presence. Always carry your ID and comply with local authorities.”.
