Silversea begins search for new UK & Ireland MD as Peter Shanks retires

Silversea is searching for a Managing Director for the UK and Ireland as industry stalwart Peter Shanks has decided to retire.

Peter, whose remit as MD also covers the Middle East and Africa, has been at Silversea for seven years, overseeing the launch of its two new Nova-class ships, Silver Nova and Silver Ray.

Silversea has announced he will step down from the cruise line in the next quarter.

Andreas ‘Andy’ Nüssel (pictured below) has been promoted to Managing Director UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa, but Silversea said he will also appoint a dedicated UK and Ireland MD ‘given the importance of these markets’.

Andy first joined the luxury cruise line in 2012 and returned to the brand as MD, Europe in 2020, after a stint with Regent Seven Seas.

Silversea credited him with ‘significantly’ increasing its market share and presence over the past five years.

“Continuing to report to Barbara Biffi, Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Nüssel will lead the strategy for Silversea in the UK, Ireland, Middle East, and Africa, in addition to his current remit in Europe,” it said.

Peter will remain within the cruise line ‘for the next few months’ to ensure a smooth handover, added Silversea.

He has spent 45 years in the travel industry, with previous roles including Thomas Cook Commercial Director, MD of Going Places and Cunard President.
