Almost a quarter of holidaymakers plan to travel in September, up from 17% three years ago, according to new research by ABTA.
Its new Travel Trends survey found that the rise in intention to travel in September, to 24%, was greater than for the traditional peak summer months of June, July and August.
Demand for travel in September is being driven by customers looking for more active breaks, such as hiking and cycling, when the weather is cooler, as well as lower prices.
“While older people aged 55 to 64 years (29%), and 65-plus year-olds (35%), say they are most likely to go abroad on holiday in September, we’re seeing an increase in intention to travel during this month across all ages,” said ABTA.
“In particular, the biggest increases are for 18 to 24-year-olds, from 11% to 17%, 35 to 44-year-olds from 12% to 20%, and those aged 65+ years old increasing the most from 22% to 35%.”
The Travel Trends for 2026 report also found that 25 to 34-year-olds are the most prolific travellers, with 84% of this age group planning to take an overseas trip in the next 12 months, well above the average of 70%.
“We also know from their travels this year that they take more holidays than anyone else – an average of 5.5 holidays overall, including 2.2 abroad,” said ABTA. “This is backed up by their commitment to splash their cash on travel – with almost half (49%) planning to spend more on their holidays in the next year.”
Some 83% of young travellers said holidays are the most important time of the year, compared to an average across other age groups of 65%, and 90% said holidays were good for their mental health and wellbeing, compared to an average of 80% for other ages.
Cruises are increasingly popular with younger travellers, according to Travel Trends, with 19% of 25 to 34-year-olds having cruised in the last 12 months, more than any other age group, even than those aged 65-plus (16%).
“This reflects the changing nature of cruise, with companies expanding their itineraries, activities and on-board facilities to appeal to a range of markets,” said ABTA.
Director of Communications Graeme Buck added: “Travel is a constantly evolving industry – presenting both opportunities and challenges for our members.
“What is clear from our research is that the demand to travel remains strong – with more people looking to travel abroad on holiday in 2026.
“The way people are travelling is changing, whether that’s embracing different types of trips or times of year to travel.”
