Santorini seismic activity declines, residents return

Residents are returning to the Greek island of Santorini as the seismic activity, which caused them to flee to the mainland last month, continues to subside.

A state of emergency on the island, announced in early February is due to end today.

During a meeting of The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection last Thursday, experts said the seismic activity was showing ‘further decline’ after remaining at its lowest levels for two weeks.

Schools on Santorini and nearby islands including Amorgos, Anafi and Ios have been closed for nearly a month but authorities have given the go ahead to reopen from tomorrow (4 March).

However, residents are advised to continue to avoid abandoned buildings and restricted ports, to secure hazardous building elements and evacuate coastal areas during strong seismic activity.

While few international tourists generally visit Santorini in March, cruise ship Viking Star is due to call at the island on 11 and 15 March and Celestyal Discovery is due on 23, 27 and 30 March.
