Sandals delays reopening three Jamaican resorts to carry out $200m upgrades

Sandals Resorts International (SRI) has pushed back the planned reopening dates for three Jamaican resorts that have been closed since Hurricane Melissa hit the island last October.

SRI reopened five of its eight Jamaica properties in December, but said Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals South Coast would not reopen until the end of May, following restoration work.

It’s now announced it will carry out further work to upgrade the properties, at a total cost of $200 million (£150m).

As a result, Sandals South Coast will reopen on 18 November this year, while Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay will reopen on 18 December.

Executive Chairman Adam Stewart said: “The opportunity to completely reimagine three resorts at this scale, with full focus and without compromising the guest experience, is extraordinarily rare.

“With our doors closed, we were given something we almost never have in hospitality, a true blank canvas, and having that clarity changed everything.

“We spent time walking the properties, speaking with our team and thinking about our guests.

“At a pivotal moment, it became clear: we shouldn’t simply restore what was there. We should dream bigger.

“When we welcome our guests back, they’ll see the transformation and they’ll feel exactly why we chose to use this moment to create something worthy of their loyalty.”

Agents who have booked clients through SRI’s in-house tour operator Unique Caribbean Holidays are being contacted by the operations team with flexible rebooking options.

Agents who made bookings through third-party tour operators should contact the operator.

Booking amendments are being dealt with in departure date order via email only and agents should contact [email protected] with any queries.
