Runways reopen, but UK airports warn of ongoing delays

Both Manchester and Liverpool airports are fully operational again this morning, but they are warning of ongoing disruption due to severe weather issues.

Snow and ice forced the airports to temporarily close their runways yesterday, causing Manchester to cancel a total of 60 flights while Liverpool cancelled 20.

In an update at 7.15am, Manchester Airport said: “Some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.”

In a post on X, it added: “Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today.

“We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runways operational again.”

So far, three Manchester flights have been cancelled today – to Abu Dhabi, Zurich and Copenhagen – and a further 62 have been delayed, according to Flightradar24.

At 7.15 am, Liverpool Airport also warned of some delays, urging passengers to check with their airlines. Departing flights are running up to 45 minutes late, while passengers flying from Birmingham Airport are facing an average delay of an hour, according to Flightradar24.

Following a weekend of travel chaos, during which almost 300 flights to and from the UK were cancelled, according to aviation analysts Cirium, the Met Office is continuing to warn of potential travel disruption across the country.

Over 60 flood warning and 260 flood alerts are in place and there are snow and ice warnings from Scotland down to the Midlands.

Major roads including parts of the M5, M50 and M1 have been closed due to extensive flooding, heavy snow and collisions.

Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in seven US states – Kansas, one of the worst-hit areas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas and parts of New Jersey – as the country suffers its worst winter storm in more than a decade.

So far, more than 3,500 US flights have been cancelled and Amtrak has cancelled around a dozen train services.
