Review: A hotel for those who love the quieter side of Mallorca

Travel Gossip reporter Hope Brotherton went to check out Iberostar Selection Es Trenc, the chain’s newest hotel in Mallorca.

The five-star Selection Es Trenc is Iberostar’s seventh premium Selection property on the island. Located in a quieter side of Mallorca, in Colònia de Sant Jordi in the south-east, it has just 145 rooms and feels quite intimate compared to some of the island’s larger hotels.

Key attractions in the area include the renowned 3km-long Es Trenc beach, and Cabrera Archipelago National Park, which is accessible on a boat tour.

First impressions

Guests are welcomed with a non-alcoholic mango and grapefruit Palomita cocktail, with salt trailing the side of the glass, which ties into the history of the nearby salt flats. While guests relax in one of the lobby’s comfy armchairs, they’re checked in by staff on an iPad.

The natural tones and glass windows make the lobby both light and relaxing. I couldn’t help but notice the floral smell in the lobby, but when I asked hotel owner Maribel Fluxà for the exact scent, she remained tight-lipped.

The room

The revamped hotel, which was previously the four-star THB Sur Mallorca, has 105 rooms and 40 suites across nine of its 11 floors, all with a sea view. Junior suites are on floors 7-10.

Every room has tea- and coffee-making facilities, an empty carafe to fill with still or sparkling water from stations located on each floor, a bathrobe, a yoga mat and a beach bag with a towel that guests can take down to the pool. Junior suites also have hair styling tools. A particularly nice touch is a welcome bar of chocolate for guests on arrival.

I had a double room overlooking the swimming pool. It was compact, but bright and relaxing thanks to the neutral colour scheme, wooden furniture and floor-to-ceiling window, which opened onto a balcony. What guests might find unusual is the lack of a full bathroom – instead, there was a vanity unit next to the bed, a separate shower and separate lavatory. I didn’t mind the setup because I was travelling alone, but I imagine a roommate using the sink in the middle of the night could be quite frustrating.

My one gripe was the lack of storage space, as there was just a hanging rail and a couple of drawers, which wouldn’t be enough for two people for a few days.

The hotel has five accessible rooms, with one on every floor between 2 and 6.

The food and drink

Guests can book all-inclusive, full-board or half-board.

The hotel’s buffet restaurant, which is the only one included in the package prices, has a nice terrace overlooking the sea. I thought it had a good choice of Mallorcan, Spanish and international breakfast dishes, such as sauteed vegetables, a range of meats, hash browns, fruits and cheeses.

Salivent, the hotel’s Mediterranean-style a la carte restaurant, is only open for dinner and there’s an extra charge. I had a selection of fish dishes, including a red prawn tartare, which was mouthwatering.

Guests can order snacks at the pool bar, and there’s a rooftop bar, and a bar in the lobby where they can order the Angela M cocktail in memory of Designer Travel agent Angela Mayall.

Other facilities

The hotel also has a fitness room where they can exercise with views of the uninhabited island of Cabarela. There’s also a spa, where treatments can be booked for an additional cost, and a swimming pool.

Staff at reception can help guests organise day trips out to Cabarela as well as a tour of the Flor de Sal salt flats.

Family friendly

While most Iberostar Selection properties are adults-only, children are allowed at Es Trenc, but there are no children’s facilities, just interconnecting rooms for families, so it might be a good options for families with older kids and teenagers.

Who else would it suit?

As it’s located in an area that’s somewhat off the beaten path, Es Trenc is an option for those who would like a quieter, more relaxed beach holiday in Mallorca.
