Princess ship blocked from docking at Caribbean port due to sick passengers

Enchanted Princess was barred from stopping at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos during a round-trip cruise from Florida.

The ship, which had departed Fort Lauderdale on 17 May, was due to stop at Grand Turk Island on Thursday, as its last port of call.

However, 30 minutes before it was due to dock, the captain announced it had been denied due to the number of passengers who were unwell.

The Turks and Caicos Government took the decision to ban Enchanted Princess after it reported 50 cases of illness onboard, including acute respiratory illness, influenza, and acute gastroenteritis.

Turks and Caicos Minister of Health and Human Services Kyle Knowles said: “The health and safety of our residents and visitors remain our top priority.

“While we welcome cruise tourism and appreciate our partners in the industry, we must act decisively when public health is at risk. “

As a result of the onboard sickness, the ship will be deep-cleaned on return to Fort Lauderdale, said Princess, slightly delaying embarkation for passengers on the next cruise on Saturday.

In an email to guests departing on 24 May, Princess said: During the previous voyage, a small number of guests reported gastrointestinal illness. As an extra precaution, the ship will undergo additional disinfection in Fort Lauderdale.

Embarkation will begin at 12 noon and passengers have been sent new check-in times.
