Around 500 flights could be impacted by Portugal’s nationwide general strike on 3 June, with widespread disruption expected across the country’s aviation and public transport networks.
Services operated by TAP Air Portugal, easyJet and Ryanair are among those expected to be affected, according to the SNPVAC union.
Cabin crew represented by the union will take part in the walkout, with Union President Ricardo Penarróias telling Portuguese media that up to 500 flights could be disrupted during the action.
The strike has been called by multiple unions in protest against proposed labour reforms, with aviation among the sectors expected to see the biggest impact.
TAP Air Portugal has introduced a flexible rebooking policy for passengers travelling on 3 June. Customers holding tickets issued by 20 May for travel on that date can move flights forward to between 27 May and 2 June or postpone travel until between 4 and 11 June without additional charges. The airline said changes can be made through its website or via travel agents.
However, Ryanair said it expects to operate as normal and does not anticipate any disruption to its services.
EasyJet warned that some disruption to its flying programme is possible and said affected customers would be contacted directly with available options.
A spokesperson added: “We will be doing all we can to minimise the impact of the strike action and will contact customers directly with their options if their flights are affected.
“While this is outside of our control, we are sorry for any inconvenience this strike action may cause”
Transport union FECTRANS is also joining the action, meaning disruption is expected across public transport networks, including Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro and commuter rail operator Fertagus.
