Ground handling staff at all major Portuguese airports have announced plans to strike across five weekends this summer.
The first strike, by handlers working for SPdH/Menzies, has been planned for 00:00 on Friday 25 July through to Monday 28 July at 23:59.
Portuguese media is reporting the walkout will affect ground operations such as check-in, baggage handling, and aircraft servicing at all airports across mainland Portugal and the islands.
Four additional strike weekends will take place throughout August 2025. Exact dates are yet to be confirmed, but they will take place at the peak of summer travel, the union SIMA has warned.
The strikes will affect all airports across mainland Portugal and the islands, including Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal, and Porto Santo, local media is reporting.
In addition, around 60 cabin crew at SATA Air Açores are striking from today (18 July) until Thursday, 24 July, with the action affecting inter-island flights in the Azores.
English language site Portugal.com is warning people to ‘plan ahead, stay informed, and allow extra time for delays’.
Website Idealista warned: “You should expect potential disruption across all major Portuguese airports and inter-island flights in the Azores during the busiest part of summer.”
