Passengers escaped a burning American Airlines plane that caught fire on landing after developing an engine fault and diverting.
Flight 1006 was travelling from Colorado Springs to Dallas Fort Worth with 172 passengers and six crew on Thursday afternoon when it reported engine vibrations.
The Boeing 737-800 diverted to Denver, Colorado and landed safely around 5.15pm local time, but caught fire while taxiing on the tarmac.
Images shared on social media show flames and smoke coming from one of the engines, and some passengers waiting to exit the plane on one of the wings.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft experienced an ‘engine-related issue’ and it would investigate the fire.
American Airlines said everyone on board had been able to exit the plane. Twelve people were taken to hospital for minor injuries.
The airline said: “We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.”
