Mallorca’s Palma Airport will activate the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU arrivals, including Brits, on Wednesday (19 November).
The system came into force on 12 October, but there has been a gradual rollout across all the member states.
Palma will be one of the first of the major Spanish holiday airports to introduce EES, which has already been tested at Madrid-Barajas and Menorca, among others.
It will mean that Brits arriving in Mallorca from Wednesday will need to provide four fingerprints and an iris scan when they arrive at passport control.
The process could take a couple of minutes per person longer than the usual passport checks, so there are warnings that this could lead to queues.
However, if there are long wait times, the airport could opt to skip the checks for some arrivals as the system isn’t due to be fully operational, with 100% of passengers being registered, until next April.
