An indefinite strike by ground staff at Palma Airport has been called off just hours before it was due to begin, averting peak summer disruption.
The walkout, scheduled by aviation services company Swissport, was planned for today (4 August), and would have impacted check-in, baggage handling and ramp services for a number of airlines, including TUI, Condor, Etihad and TAP Air Portugal.
The action was suspended following an agreement reached at the Balearic Mediation and Arbitration Tribunal, covering key union demands on working conditions.
Measures include expanded full-time hours for part-time staff who request it, a €85 monthly summer incentive, guaranteed two consecutive rest days for shift workers and the creation of a committee to regulate irregular hours. Swissport has also committed to vehicle air-conditioning repairs and additional staff welfare measures during extreme heat.
Under Spanish law, strikes cannot bring airport services to a complete standstill. But Mallorca Airport had previously warned that only 50% to 60% of international flights on ‘high-demand routes’ were guaranteed to operate, had the strikes gone ahead.
Previous partial strikes in late July and early August had caused only minor delays.
A statement on the airport’s website says: “There are no current strikes at Palma Airport.
“An initial partial strike action by Swissport ground handling staff at Palma de Mallorca Airport was due to turn into an indefinite strike on 4/8/2026. Luckily, this strike has now been called off after an agreement was reached.”
