MSC Orchestra cruise reportedly cancelled after ship fire causes power outage

MSC Orchestra was left floating adrift in the Mediterranean for several hours earlier this week after a small electrical fire knocked out the power.

Smoke from the fire spread from deck 3 to deck 11 of the ship, according to Cruise Hive, but there are no reported injuries amongst crew or passengers.

The incident happened during MSC Orchestra’s latest seven-night round-trip cruise from Marseille, which departed on 28 May

It had left Rome on Monday evening and was heading to Genoa when the fire broke out, said Cruise Hive.

After drifting off the coast of Corsica for several hours, it was able to resume sailing and headed to Genoa, arriving nearly 10 hours late.

The ship was due to arrive in Marseille this morning to pick up passengers for the next seven-night round-trip cruise, but passengers have reportedly been told this has been cancelled.

The ship is still in Genoa, according to Cruise Mapper.

In a statement, MSC said: “MSC Orchestra experienced a technical issue in the engine room during the early hours of Tuesday morning, which affected the electrical switchboard and resulted in smoke being generated in a specific engineering area of the ship. This was contained by the safety systems in the immediate area, this operation had no impact on other areas of the ship, including guest spaces.  There are no reported injuries.

“As part of our safety procedures, all guests were promptly informed of the situation.

“The ship has arrived in Genoa where it will remain for assessment and any necessary repairs. As such the present cruise is cancelled. Guests have been contacted, and assistance is being provided, and appropriate refunds are being offered to impacted guests.”
