The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued new travel advice for Mexico, with an update on the violent clashes that took place in earlier this week.
Violence erupted in several areas, including Quintana Roo, where Cancun, Tulum and Cozumel are located, following the killing of a drug cartel boss on Sunday (22 February).
The violence prompted the FCDO to advise against all but essential travel to the state of Jalisco, which includes the resort of Puerto Vallarta (pictured) and the FIFA World Cup 2026 host city of Guadalajara.
The latest update says the situation is getting back to normal in many areas, flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports have resumed and public transport in Jalisco is now operating again.
The update says: “The situation outside Jalisco state has now returned to normal, with no further roadblocks or clashes reported due to the 22 February clashes.”
It adds: “You should read thoroughly the UK travel advice for Mexico, including on safety and security, and note that we advise all but essential travel to specific areas of Mexico. Wherever you are in Mexico, stay alert and follow local security advice.
“If you are in Jalisco state, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities, including any shelter-in-place instructions. Also consider keeping friends and family updated about your location and well-being.
“Flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports have resumed, though there remains the possibility of cancellations and changes to flight schedules. Check with your airline to confirm your flight status and schedule. Only travel to the airport if you have a confirmed flight and it is safe to do so.
“The Jalisco government reports that public transport has resumed. Be alert to potential disruptions and check local media, official guidance and updates from transport providers before deciding whether to travel. If you choose to travel, remain vigilant and be prepared for possible delays or changes to routes.”
